AMAG Symmetry Access Control: versions, controllers, end of life and upgrade options

AMAG TechnologyGateStride: Not yet scheduledReviewed October 2026

By Tom Jin

Symmetry Access Control is AMAG Technology's on-premise access control software. The current generation is V10, sold as a Professional edition for mid-sized sites and an Enterprise edition for large and multi-site organizations. A separate Homeland Security Edition targets federal and regulated sites that need FIPS 201, PIV, CAC and TWIC credentials.

One naming point causes confusion. Symmetry CONNECT is not the access control system: it is AMAG's identity management (PIAM) product for identity workflows and HR and IT integration. If someone says your building runs Symmetry, they almost always mean Symmetry Access Control. AMAG runs its own controller families (M4000, M2150, SR and EN series), and AMAG lists all of them as backward compatible, which is helpful when an older site wants to modernize in stages.

How to recognise AMAG Symmetry

Look for the Symmetry Access Control client on the security workstation, and AMAG-branded controller panels in the comms room. The model names on AMAG panels start with M (M4000, M2150), SR or EN. Older sites may still use legacy CASI Rusco F/2F readers, which AMAG controllers still support.

  • The software is Symmetry Access Control; V10 is the current release. Symmetry CONNECT is a different product (identity management).
  • Controller labels read M4000, M2150 (DBC or DBU), SR series or EN-1DBC+ / EN-2DBC.
  • Readers connect over Wiegand, MCLP, OSDP or F/2F, so you may see a mix of reader brands and ages.
  • Federal or regulated sites may run the Homeland Security Edition with PIV or CAC card readers.

What is ending, and when

We found no dated end-of-life notice for Symmetry V10 or for the M4000, M2150, SR or EN controller families. AMAG's controller overview lists all of them as current and backward compatible. Older Symmetry releases and discontinued panels may have their own notices, but we could not confirm any dates from AMAG's public pages.

The firm dependency we did find is software version: the M4000 needs Symmetry V9.1 or later. A site on an older release has to update the software before adding M4000 panels. Ask AMAG or your installer which release you run and whether it is still supported.

See every dated notice in the end-of-life tracker.

What offices commonly miss

  • Exits are usually free: people push a bar or trip a request-to-exit sensor. The system logs the door opening but not who left, so it cannot give an exit record or a live occupancy list unless exits are badged.
  • The integration interface is older in style. AMAG's datasheet names an XML Open Integration Module; details of web services or an SDK were not confirmed on public pages.
  • Edition limits matter. The Professional edition tops out at 512 readers and 9 clients; growing beyond that means moving to Enterprise.
  • Do not confuse Symmetry CONNECT with access control. Buying identity management will not add phone unlock or exit tracking to the doors.

Integration options

AMAG's V10 Enterprise datasheet names an XML Open Integration Module and refers to over 100 certified product interfaces. The M4000 controller is described as having an open API. Beyond those statements, AMAG's public pages did not confirm web services, SDK terms or licence costs, so any third-party connection should be treated as a project that needs AMAG's input.

AMAG controllers are described in AMAG's datasheets as AMAG's own hardware. Whether they share any lineage with Mercury boards is not confirmed, so do not assume a Mercury-based platform could take them over.

Upgrade paths

Keep Symmetry and add features as software

If doors and panels work, keep them. Phone unlock or a record of who left can come from software connected through AMAG's integration interface, once AMAG confirms the route and any licence for your edition.

Refresh within Symmetry

Update to V10, then replace older panels in stages with M2150, M4000, SR retrofit or EN edge controllers. AMAG lists these as backward compatible and supports legacy F/2F readers, so the doors and many readers can stay.

Full replacement

Moving to another platform usually means new controllers as well as new software, because AMAG panels are AMAG hardware. Compare that cost with a staged refresh before deciding.

GateStride and AMAG Symmetry

Not yet scheduled GateStride has not scheduled an AMAG Symmetry integration. It is not on our roadmap yet, and we do not support Symmetry today. GateStride is in early access and currently works with Kantech EntraPass. If your office runs Symmetry, tell us your edition, version and door count. Demand decides what we build next, and we will only call an integration Verified after testing it ourselves on a live system.

Questions about AMAG Symmetry

What is the difference between Symmetry and Symmetry CONNECT?
Symmetry Access Control is the system that runs your doors, readers and cardholders. Symmetry CONNECT is AMAG's identity management product, used for identity workflows and links to HR and IT systems. If you want to change how doors open, you are dealing with Symmetry Access Control.
Is AMAG Symmetry end of life?
We found no end-of-life notice for Symmetry V10 or its current controller families. AMAG lists the M4000, M2150, SR and EN controllers as current and backward compatible. Support dates for older releases were not confirmed, so check your version with AMAG or your installer.
Which Symmetry edition do I have?
Check the About screen in the client. Professional supports up to 512 readers and 9 clients; Enterprise has no reader, cardholder or client limit and offers a cluster-aware option. Federal sites may run the Homeland Security Edition for PIV and CAC cards.
Can my old readers stay if I upgrade AMAG controllers?
Often. AMAG controllers accept Wiegand, MCLP, OSDP and the legacy F/2F format used by older CASI Rusco readers, and AMAG markets its SR series for legacy upgrades. Confirm reader compatibility on your specific panels before ordering.
