Avigilon Alta (formerly Openpath): hardware, versions, end of life and upgrade options

Avigilon, a Motorola Solutions companyGateStride: Not yet scheduledReviewed October 2026

By Tom Jin

Avigilon Alta is the cloud access control platform from Avigilon, a Motorola Solutions company. It was previously sold as Openpath; its developer documentation still lives at the Openpath address. Alta is serverless: there is no access control server in the building, only door hardware that talks to Avigilon's cloud.

Alta is used by organizations from small offices to multi-site enterprises. Its best-known feature is phone entry: Avigilon describes Wave to Unlock and its patented Triple Unlock technology through the Alta Open app, alongside key cards, fobs, PINs and digital guest passes. Unlike most systems on this site, Alta already offers phone unlock as part of the platform, so the questions an office asks about it are usually about subscription costs, hardware choices and what happens to existing panels. Avigilon also sells Unity Access, a separate on-premise system, which is a different product.

How to recognise Avigilon Alta

An Alta site has no access control server. Staff open doors with the Alta Open app or with cards, and admins manage the system in a web portal. In the comms room or above a ceiling you will find Alta Smart Hubs or an Access Control Core board with expansion boards. Some sites run Alta on Mercury MP controllers instead. Older doors and documents may still carry the Openpath name.

  • Staff use the Alta Open app (or the older Openpath app) to unlock doors with their phone.
  • Admins log into a cloud web portal; there is no on-site access control server.
  • Hardware is Alta Smart Hubs (4, 8 or 16 doors, plus an elevator version) or the Access Control Core OP-ACC with OP-4EX4 / OP-8EX8 expansion boards.
  • Some sites use Mercury MP1501, MP1502 or MP2500 controllers connected to Alta, often after migrating from another system.

What is ending, and when

Because Alta is a cloud service, there are no customer-managed software versions to fall out of support. The vendor updates the platform. We found no end-of-life notice for current Alta hardware. The rename from Openpath to Alta changed the brand, not the platform.

The lifecycle question that matters is usually about the panels you bring with you. Alta lists Mercury MP1501, MP1502 and MP2500 for cloud migration. Mercury's older LP series stopped shipping at the end of 2024 and is supported through December 31, 2028, and the EP series is end of life. If a migration plan relies on reusing panels, confirm the exact models first.

What offices commonly miss

  • Exits are usually free: people push a bar or trip a request-to-exit sensor. The system logs a door opening but not who left, so there is no exit record unless exits are badged or another sensor identifies people.
  • Alta is cloud-only. Admin, reporting and the API depend on the vendor's cloud service; there is no on-premise server option within Alta itself.
  • Panel reuse is limited to what Avigilon lists. The confirmed Mercury models are MP1501, MP1502 and MP2500; do not assume older LP or EP boards can move to Alta.
  • We found no confirmed public prices for Alta. Get a written quote that separates per-door and per-user charges.

Integration options

Alta has the most open integration surface in this group. Its REST API is publicly documented, including a cloudKeyEntryUnlock call for remote unlock, activity and alarm events, and REST-hook (webhook) subscriptions that push events to another system. Authentication uses basic auth or a login API. Avigilon says the platform supports over 100 integration apps.

Avigilon runs a technology partner program with a separate application for Alta. Reading the public API documentation does not require a login, but building a supported integration is normally done as a partner.

Upgrade paths

Keep Alta and add only what is missing

Alta already offers phone entry, so most offices keep it as is. If you need something it does not do, such as an exit record, look for software that uses Alta's public API and webhooks rather than replacing hardware.

Expand or refresh within Alta

Add Smart Hubs or expansion boards as doors are added. If you are moving an existing Mercury site onto Alta, check which panels are MP1501, MP1502 or MP2500 and plan to replace older LP or EP boards.

Leave Alta

Moving to another platform means checking which hardware is reusable. Alta-native hubs and core boards are Alta hardware; Mercury MP boards are open hardware that some other platforms can run. Compare the cost of new hardware against staying.

GateStride and Avigilon Alta

Not yet scheduled GateStride has not scheduled an Avigilon Alta integration. It is not on our roadmap yet, and we do not support Alta today. GateStride is in early access and currently works with Kantech EntraPass. If your office runs Alta and wants something it does not do today, such as knowing who has left, tell us. Demand decides what we build next, and we will only call an integration Verified after testing it ourselves on a live system. For how the two approaches differ, see GateStride vs Openpath / Avigilon Alta.

Questions about Avigilon Alta

Is Openpath the same as Avigilon Alta?
Yes. Avigilon lists Alta as the former Openpath. The platform is the same cloud service, and its public API documentation is still hosted at openpath.readme.io. Older apps, door stickers and paperwork may still say Openpath, so both names can appear on the same site.
Can Avigilon Alta use my existing Mercury controllers?
Avigilon lists Mercury MP1501, MP1502 and MP2500 controllers as supported for cloud migration. We did not find Mercury LP or EP boards on that list. Check your panel labels, and ask Avigilon to confirm support before you plan to reuse them.
Does Alta have a public API?
Yes. Alta's REST API is documented publicly at openpath.readme.io. It includes a remote unlock call (cloudKeyEntryUnlock), activity and alarm events, and webhook subscriptions. Building a supported integration usually goes through Avigilon's technology partner program, which has a separate application for Alta.
Does Alta offer phone unlock?
Yes. Avigilon describes Wave to Unlock and Triple Unlock through the Alta Open app, alongside key cards, fobs, PINs and digital guest passes. Phone entry is a core part of the platform rather than an add-on from another vendor, so most Alta offices already have it.
