LenelS2 OnGuard: versions, controllers, integration and upgrade options

LenelS2, now part of HoneywellGateStride: In developmentReviewed October 2026

By Tom Jin

OnGuard is the enterprise access-control platform from LenelS2. It manages LNL-series door controllers, cardholders and visitors, and offers browser clients for monitoring, credentials, visitors and access management. It comes in tiers, OnGuard ES, ADV, PRO and Enterprise, and as OnGuard Cloud, an AWS-hosted service. The latest version is OnGuard 8.4. LenelS2 was formerly part of Carrier and now belongs to Honeywell, which also makes Pro-Watch and WIN-PAK.

You typically find OnGuard in mid-size to large organisations, government, airports and multi-site enterprises, installed and maintained by security integrators. A small office usually meets OnGuard as a tenant in a managed building or as a branch of a larger company. OnGuard is known for its large partner ecosystem: the OpenAccess Alliance Program lists more than 200 certified partners.

How to recognise LenelS2 OnGuard

Look for the OnGuard name on the server and workstation software, or in a browser through OnGuard's web clients such as Monitor, Credentials, Visitor and Access Manager. The door controllers are LenelS2 LNL-series units. Readers are often LenelS2 BlueDiamond multi-technology readers, and staff may carry a BlueDiamond mobile credential or an employee badge in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

  • Software named OnGuard, with a tier such as ES, ADV, PRO or Enterprise, or a hosted OnGuard Cloud login.
  • Browser clients named OnGuard Monitor, Credentials, Visitor or Access Manager.
  • Controllers with LNL part numbers: LNL-X2210, X2220, X3300, X4420, or LNL-M2210, M2220, M3300, M4420.
  • I/O and reader modules such as LNL-1100, LNL-1200, LNL-1300 or LNL-1320 (Series 3), or the LNL-1324E door module.
  • LenelS2 BlueDiamond readers, the BlueDiamond mobile app, or badges in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet.

What is ending, and when

OnGuard has no dated end-of-life notice in our sources: 8.4 is the latest release, and both the LNL-X and LNL-M controller lines are listed as current on the OnGuard page. We could not confirm support end dates for OnGuard 8.1, 8.2 or 8.3, so we mark them unconfirmed. LenelS2 publishes an OnGuard software support plan (SUSP), and version-to-version certification matters for integrations: partner integrations are certified per OnGuard version, so check that any add-on you rely on is certified for the version you plan to move to.

The controller picture is worth watching. LenelS2 is one of Mercury's top-tier OEM partners, and Honeywell's catalogue labels the LNL-M line as "MP Series". It is our inference, not a vendor statement, that the LNL-X line matches Mercury's LP generation; the LNL datasheets do not say so. If it does, Mercury's LP end of sale (last ship 12/31/2024, end of life 12/31/2028) would be relevant to LNL-X sites. See Mercury LP controllers end of sale and the end-of-life tracker, and confirm with your integrator.

What offices commonly miss

  • No record of who left. Exits normally release through a request-to-exit device without a badge, so OnGuard logs who entered but not who walked out.
  • Every integration needs a licence. Third-party integrations use a per-partner OnGuard API licence on your system, in addition to the add-on product itself.
  • Upgrades can break add-ons. Partner integrations are certified per OnGuard version, and a certification for one version does not carry over automatically to the next.
  • It is integrator-run. OnGuard installation, licensing and upgrades are normally handled by an integrator, so a small office rarely changes the system on its own.

Integration options

OnGuard has one of the most open integration programs in enterprise access control. Through the OpenAccess Alliance Program (OAAP), LenelS2 offers three named APIs: OpenAccess, which LenelS2 describes as bi-directional; OpenDevice, for bringing third-party panels and devices into OnGuard; and OpenVideo, for video systems. LenelS2 states that "Our APIs are publicly available". OAAP lists more than 200 certified partners, including mobile-credential vendors, which shows that phone-unlock products can be added on top of OnGuard.

There are conditions. Each partner integration needs an OnGuard API licence on the customer's system, sold as a specific part number, and certification is per OnGuard version. One listed partner integration, for example, is certified for 8.1 and 8.2 but not 8.3. The detailed API documentation is reached through the OAAP application. Whether the older DataConduIT interface is still supported in 8.x is not confirmed in our sources. LNL controllers talk only to OnGuard, so integrations work at the OnGuard server, not at the panel.

Upgrade paths

Keep OnGuard and add a certified integration

If your OnGuard version and LNL controllers are current, the lowest-disruption route is to add features through an OAAP-certified product using the OpenAccess API. Check that it is certified for your exact OnGuard version and budget for the OnGuard API licence.

Upgrade OnGuard and refresh controllers

Move to OnGuard 8.4 and replace older controllers with current LNL-M models, re-checking that every integration you depend on is certified for the new version. Staying on OnGuard avoids re-enrolling cardholders on a new platform.

Replace or move to cloud

LenelS2 also offers OnGuard Cloud and its separate Elements cloud platform, with a connector to OnGuard. A move to another vendor means new controllers and re-commissioning every door; it is the most expensive route and is rarely needed for a current OnGuard site.

Compare the routes over three years in the savings calculator.

GateStride and LenelS2 OnGuard

In development OnGuard is In development for GateStride. We are building the integration through LenelS2's OpenAccess API, covering OnGuard 8.x (ES, ADV, PRO and Enterprise), but it has not yet been tested on a live customer system, so GateStride does not work with OnGuard today. GateStride is in early access. If you run OnGuard and want to follow the work, tell us.

Questions about LenelS2 OnGuard

Who owns LenelS2 now?
Honeywell. LenelS2 was part of Carrier's access business and its product pages now sit on Honeywell's Building Automation site, which also hosts Pro-Watch and WIN-PAK. We have not verified the deal's announcement and closing dates from a primary source, so we do not quote them here.
What is the latest OnGuard version?
OnGuard 8.4, according to LenelS2's product pages and datasheet. Versions 8.3, 8.2 and 8.1 also have datasheets. Before upgrading, check that every third-party integration you rely on is certified for the new version, because LenelS2 certifies partner integrations per OnGuard release.
Does OnGuard have a public API?
Yes. LenelS2 offers the OpenAccess, OpenDevice and OpenVideo APIs through its OpenAccess Alliance Program and states its APIs are publicly available. Using an integration in production needs an OnGuard API licence on your system, and the integration should be certified for your OnGuard version.
Can OnGuard unlock doors from a phone?
Yes. LenelS2's BlueDiamond mobile app works as a credential, and OnGuard supports employee badges in Apple Wallet and Google Wallet in North America. Several OAAP partners also offer mobile credentials. None of these records who leaves through a door released by a request-to-exit device.
